Synopsis

Set in Bamako, Malian director Daouda Coulibaly’s debut feature is a constantly absorbing political crime thriller, set during the lead-up to the Mali coup d’état in 2012. This pulse-pounding action narrative tells the story of Ladji, a low-level transit worker who is exasperated by a lack of opportunities in Mali’s harsh capital. Ladji turns to drug trafficking and rapidly ascends in Bamako’s criminal underworld which eventually gives him access to unimaginable wealth. Soon enough, the young man is caught in a overwhelming spiral of events, when he has to deal with corrupt officials and when the drug trade moves into Al-Qaeda territory. Wùlu skilfully merges African oral storytelling traditions with a modern narrative to create an exhilarating plot.
