Living in Bondage

Synopsis

Living in Bondage is a 1992 Nigerian thriller; a pioneering Nollywood classic. The very first hugely successful Nollywood film, it established a new way of filmmaking which influence has since reverberated across the globe. The film introduced many of the staple themes of Nollywood that still recur today; aspirations for wealth, romantic troubles and the supernatural and occult. Andy and Merit Okeke are troubled by several obstacles in their marriage, they lose their savings, just as Merit receives an indecent proposal and loses her job. Determined to obtain wealth by any means possible, Andy adheres to a friend’s secret to success - a satanic cult. After much deliberation, Andy is convinced he needs to take action, but would he be able to handle the consequences? Often talked about but rarely seen, this is a unique opportunity to experience this preeminent Nollywood classic in a public setting.

This screening is part of AiM’s focus on Africa’s Lost Classics, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)
